How I Transitioned Into IT Audit and Landed a Big 4 Job
Sometimes the career paths that change our lives are the ones we never knew existed.
For many people, the technology industry feels out of reach. When they think about entering tech, they immediately assume it requires coding, software engineering, or years of technical training.
That was the perception I had at one point as well. What I did not realize then was that there were other valuable roles within technology that focus on systems, risk management, and controls. One of those roles is IT Audit.
Discovering IT Audit completely changed the direction of my career.
The Season of Searching
Before transitioning into IT Audit, I had already been studying and applying for opportunities within the technology and risk space. I was reading articles, learning concepts, and trying to understand how organizations manage technology risks.
But despite all the effort, I was not gaining traction. Like many people navigating a career transition, I was doing a lot of learning but still lacked clarity. I understood pieces of information, but I did not yet understand how everything connected in practice.
That lack of structure made the journey more difficult than it needed to be.
The Moment Everything Began to Make Sense
During that season of searching, I came across an IT Audit program offered by a wonderful instructor.
After reviewing some of her free resources, I immediately realized that her teaching approach made things clearer. The way she explained IT Audit concepts helped me see how systems, risks, and controls were connected.
I reached out to her because I wanted to enroll in her program.
However, at the time my financial situation was limited, and I simply could not afford the full program she was offering. Even though I knew I could learn a lot from her, the cost was beyond what I could manage at that moment.
An Opportunity I Did Not Expect
I reached out to her and honestly explained my situation. I asked if there was any possibility of a reduced price or a smaller option that I could afford. Initially she explained that she could not reduce the cost of the full program.
But the following day, she reached out again. She graciously offered me access to a small module from the program at a much lower cost. The module focused on the introduction to IT and access management.
It may have seemed like a small opportunity, but it became one of the most important turning points in my career journey.
“Sometimes the opportunity that changes your life does not arrive as something big. It arrives as clarity.”
That small module I was offered helped me understand IT Audit in a way that months of reading had not. Once the concepts connected, my confidence grew and the opportunities followed.
Clarity Changed Everything
I studied that module carefully. For the first time, many of the concepts I had been reading about began to connect in a practical way. I started to understand how IT auditors think about risks, how controls are designed to reduce those risks, and how auditors test those controls in real organizations.
That clarity gave me confidence. Instead of feeling like I was trying to piece information together randomly, I finally understood how the profession worked.
Not long after that, something remarkable happened. Within about a month of gaining that clarity, I landed an opportunity to work in IT Audit at one of the Big 4 professional services firms. That moment changed the direction of my life.
A Promise I Made During That Season
During the period when I was waiting and applying for opportunities, I spent a lot of time reflecting and praying.
I made a personal commitment. I said that if I was given the opportunity to enter this field, I would help as many people as possible who were serious about learning and building a career in IT Audit.
Because I knew how frustrating it could feel to study hard and still lack the clarity needed to move forward.
That commitment later became the foundation for what is now known as Layo’s Academy.
Why I Started Layo’s Academy
Layo’s Academy was created as a way to give people the clarity and structure that many beginners struggle to find.
Many talented professionals are capable of succeeding in IT Audit, but they simply do not know where to start or how the concepts connect in real environments.
The goal of the academy is to simplify the journey and help beginners understand IT Audit step by step.
Instead of overwhelming learners with technical complexity, the focus is on building a strong foundation that helps them understand the profession with confidence.
Why This Career Path Matters
IT Audit is a powerful career path for several reasons.
Organizations across every industry rely heavily on technology systems. Because of this reliance, they must ensure those systems are secure, reliable, and operating effectively.
IT auditors play a key role in evaluating these systems and the controls that protect them.
This creates strong career opportunities across many industries including financial institutions, consulting firms, healthcare organizations, and government agencies.
For many professionals, IT Audit offers a path into technology that combines analytical thinking, risk management, and business understanding.
A Journey That Starts With Clarity
Every career journey begins with a moment of discovery. For me, that moment came when someone extended a small opportunity that helped me see IT Audit with clarity. That clarity opened doors that once seemed impossible.
Today my goal is to help others experience that same clarity so they can confidently pursue opportunities in this field.
If you are exploring a career in IT Audit and want to understand how the profession works in real environments, structured learning can make the journey much easier. Sometimes all it takes is the right guidance at the right time.
And that small opportunity may become the beginning of a life changing career.
